Darlene And Tom’s New Life On
Panama’s Azuero Sunset Coast

“In 2007 my husband Tom and I planned a vacation in Cancún.” Darlene explains.

“Then, in October, weeks before our trip, the hotel was damaged by a hurricane.

“We decided to change our plans.

“Looking at the map, we picked Panama as our replacement destination… primarily because, we realized, it doesn’t get hurricanes.

“We arrived in Panama for the first time for what amounted to practical reasons. Once here, though, it was love at first sight. We were won over immediately by the country and by the people. We’ve been returning as often as we could ever since.

“Finally, we agreed that we wanted to do more than come and go as tourists. We wanted to make Panama our home… at least part-time.

“We’ve been reading Kathleen Peddicord for years…” Darlene continues. “Since she was living in Ireland. More recently, we’ve been following her husband’s writings, too.

“When Kathleen and Lief began writing about their efforts at Los Islotes, on Panama’s western Azuero coast, it got our attention.

“From what we read, Los Islotes had everything we wanted in a part-time retirement home—a private beach, a warm climate, lush mountainous terrain (that remind us of the Hobbit movies), and a gated community.

“We shopped around… considered other coastal options in Panama… but nothing fit us the way Los Islotes fit us. Affordability was a key factor.

“Now, three years later, we are moving into our just-finished home in Los Islotes’ Mango Village neighborhood.

“Our plan is to spend as much time at Los Islotes as possible.” Darlene explains. “We intend to be here every winter… and to spend summer months on Lake Superior in Superior, Wisconsin, where we’re from.

“When we decided to build a house at Los Islotes, we weren’t sure, frankly, what we’d do with it. We’ve owned and managed rental properties in the United States and thought we could do that here, too.

“Now that the house is finished, though, and we’ve gotten to know Los Islotes better, we’re thinking we don’t want to rent our new little casa. We want to live in it ourselves!

“Our plan now is to hire a property manager back in the States so we can spend as much time as possible in our new home in Panama.

“We’re here now indefinitely. We’re going to live in our new home while getting to know the area better and trying to gauge the real demand for rentals. Eventually, we think we might rent out this house and build another one on another lot in a different section of Los Islotes.

“Back in the States, Tom worked for Motorola as a cellular communications engineer. He was in their overseas division. This took him to 23 countries, mostly in Central and South America. That travel helped to make our transition to part-time living in Panama easier.

“I spent my career as a board-certified advanced practice nurse and retired from St. Cloud State University as a professor of psychiatric nursing. I bring that experience with me now to our new home.

“When we were younger,” Darlene continues “We enjoyed ice fishing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and building snowmen.

“Now, we look forward to building sand castles on our beach, helping baby turtles find their way back into the ocean, and being warm all the time.

“We’re embarking on a whole new chapter. And having the time of our lives.”

Other former bubble markets worldwide have imploded. Why not the Panama market?

I can identify four reasons:

  1. This market was not made and is not supported by Americans, at least not 100%. This market was also made by Venezuelans, Colombians, and other Latino investors looking for safe haven for their capital. Panama continues to offer this, certainly relative to other regional options…
  2. Panama is not only a safe haven for worried investors from less free markets, it’s also the top doing-business haven in this part of the world. Big international firms (more than 40 of them, including Dell, 3M, Procter & Gamble, Caterpillar) have targeted this country, especially Panama City’s Panama Pacífico international business park located at the former Howard Air Force Base.
  3. Panama’s own infrastructure improvement projects (such as the Panama Canal expansion project… the Cinta Costera Panama City-center thoroughfare… the Panama City metro expansion… and the nearly doubling in size of the already bigger-than-any-other-airport-in-the-region Tocumen International) are requiring a big and ongoing influx of foreign labor. This foreign labor population is an important and expanding piece of this country’s economy…
  4. Meantime, the middle class in this country is exploding in size, creating ever-expanding local markets…

My Rallying Recommendation Gets You Only So Far

Internet research… email communications… armchair searching and planning… manuals, reports, and guidebooks…

All these resources are great… but no amount of them is enough.

You can’t determine whether or not Panama makes sense for you as a place to think seriously about retiring or relocating or buying pre-construction or investing in raw land or setting up a corporation or launching a new business… long-distance.

In Panama You Could Embrace The Resilient Life

Coley and his wife weren’t worried about money, making ends meet, or how they’d pay for retirement. Coley was making a great living, the young couple and their two small children were enjoying a fully appointed life in Washington, D.C., and retirement was decades away. Looking ahead, their lives seemed to promise lots more of the same—more earnings and an even more comfortable lifestyle as they continued to work hard and make their way up the D.C. ladder. They had achieved, at early ages, the life that many Americans dream about.

Only it wasn’t working for them. From their position in the U.S. capital, they had an insider’s view of what was going on and, from their perspective, what was going wrong. This was seven years ago, and, after a lot of research and months of soul-searching, Coley and his wife, in their mid-30s, scooped up their two little ones and opted out. “We wanted to get out while we were still young enough to remake our lives and our children’s futures in a way that made more sense to us.”

Coley and his young family hopped a flight from the American capital to the Panamanian one, where, months before, they’d purchased a house on the beach. They had to pull the trigger on their plan, because their house back in the States had sold. Yet, they discovered, their new home on the coast outside Panama City wasn’t finished yet. Arriving in Panama, the little family checked into the InterContinental Hotel.

“We were at the InterContinental for weeks,” Coley explained one evening when we met for dinner. “I would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. What had I done? What was I doing? We were living in a hotel in a third-world city with two toddlers, for crying out loud. Burning through our savings. No one could promise when our house would be ready for us to move in. I thought I’d made the biggest mistake of my life.”

Today, seven years later, Coley is confident that moving his family to Panama was the smartest thing he could have done at the time and that, if he hadn’t done it then, he’d do it today for sure. “I look at what’s going on back in the States,” he says, “and I know we made the right choice. I see very bad times ahead for my country. I think my family and I can do better for ourselves in this life we’re creating for ourselves.

“There’s so much unhappiness and uncertainty in the United States right now, especially in D.C. I think people in that part of the country are at the epicenter of a growing recognition that things are out of control. What I realized years ago was that nobody was going to get things back under control anytime soon. Our only choice, each of us, is to take control of our own lives. I say this to friends and clients back in D.C. today, and they agree. They see this truth as well as I do. But they’re scared, intimidated. I understand. I was scared, too, when the realization first set in for me.

“All I can say is that this move to a simpler life here in Panama that we found the courage to make? It was the best move and the best decision of our lives.”

14 Reasons Panama Is One Of The
World’s Top Retirement Havens

#1: The cost of living is affordable. Outside Panama City, it remains downright cheap. You could retire to the beach in Las Tablas, for example, on the country’s Azuero Peninsula, on a budget of US$1,000 per month or even less.

#2: The sun shines year-round. Panama City can be too hot and sticky for some retirees’ tastes, but, again, look beyond the capital, and you find pockets of near-perfect climates in some regions. If you prefer cool mountain temperatures to steamy sea-level ones, consider Boquete or, less discovered and therefore more affordable, Santa Fe.

#3: The retiree’s path is well-worn. This country has been attracting foreign retirees in growing numbers for more than a decade. It offers many and very user-friendly options for establishing foreign residency if you want to live here full-time, and it is home to established and welcoming communities of expats and retirees.

#4: You can get by without speaking Spanish. I don’t recommend it, but, in Panama City, you don’t have to learn to speak Spanish if you don’t want to.

#5: Health care in Panama is of an international standard, and Panama City is home to Hospital Punta Pacífica, the only hospital in Latin America affiliated with and managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International.

#6: The cost of medical care is a bargain. Like everything, medical costs are higher in Panama City than elsewhere in the country, but, even in the capital, a doctor’s visit costs US$50 or less.

#7: Local Panama health insurance (which can be good, comprehensive coverage, all you need living in this country) can cost US$100 per month or less.

#8: The infrastructure is of a high standard. This is a place where things generally work—the internet, cable TV, phone service, etc., are all as reliable as anywhere in the States. The roadways and highway systems are being constantly expanded and improved.

Panama City is an international banking center, meaning you find banks here from all over the world. ATMs are on every corner.

#9: The currency is the U.S. dollar, so U.S. retirees have no currency-exchange risk or exposure.

#10: Panama City is an international travel hub, very accessible from North America. The flight from Miami, for example, is about two-and-a-half hours.

#11: Panama’s pensionado program of special benefits and discounts for foreign retirees is the current Gold Standard. Retired in this country, you can save as much as 50% on everything from restaurant meals to in-country airfares, from prescription medicines to closing costs on your new beach house.

#12: This is a nature-lover’s paradise, boasting some of the world’s best surfing, snorkeling, diving, sportfishing, birding, hiking, and adventure-travel opportunities anywhere on earth.

#13: This is a safe, welcoming place to call home.

#14: Retirees you meet in Panama aren’t losing sleep over their futures. They’re embracing them.

In addition, my husband, Lief Simon (yes, the guy I introduced to you above), and I made an important geographic decision. We decided to make a third international move with our family and my new business, from Paris to Panama City.

In other words, I’ve been covering this beat, researching, writing, speaking, and presenting on the opportunities for living, retiring, and investing overseas, for more than three decades.

I have moved children, staff, enterprises, household goods, and pets from the East Coast of the United States first to Waterford, Ireland… then to Paris, France… next to Panama City, Panama… and, most recently, we’ve flipped the switch to a new stage of our lives that has us moving around the world regularly with Paris and Panama City as complementary home bases.

I have traveled to more than 75 countries, invested in real estate in 23, established businesses in 7, and renovated historic properties in 6. I’ve written six books (including a brand-new and expanded edition of my best-selling “How To Retire Overseas” just published by Penguin Random House) on why and how you might want to do the same and I’ve appeared many dozens of times on television and radio (everything from Bloomberg and CNBC to Fox and the Regis Philbin Show) detailing opportunities for living, retiring, and investing all around the world.
