Chitre is an honest, unpretentious regional capital town. Its preoccupations are based on agriculture and local provincial commerce. It also offers its residents a growing choice of options in terms of dining out, shopping, and entertainment, so much so, in fact, that it’s barely necessary to travel to Panama City except to catch an international flight.
Set within a hinterland of tropical dry forest and cultivated agricultural land, Chitre has really flourished in recent years. Cosmopolitan and urban, with the quiet, secure feel of a much smaller country town, Chitre has a population of around 30,000 that seems to be growing all the time due to an unprecedented building boom and an influx of new business to the town and region.
